Indian Ocean: Red Sea and East Africa eastward to western Thailand and Sumatra, Indonesia.

Inhabits coral-rich seaward reef slopes. Occurs singly. Digs holes below coral bases for shelter. Feeds on sponges, algae, crustaceans and small invertebrates. Caught with artisanal gear.
